Bubblegum Crisis from 1987 is similarly set in a dystopian future city, where machines work side by side with humans. Japanese animation was quick to embrace this new genre called `cyberpunk` and one of the early series produced still remains highly popular, despite only running to eight episodes. To say Bladerunner has been an inspiration for subsequent cinema is an understatement on the order of `the Pacific Ocean is kind of big`. Ridley Scott`s vision also presented us with a rundown, dystopian future, gritty and grimy, and absolutely mesmerising in its depth. Bladerunner gave us a new perspective, an exploration of future society and what it means to be human. Prior to that, we expected sci-fi to mean space travel and ray guns, alien invasions and monsters from the deep. It's very 80s in most ways and there are a number of directors and producers who were relatively new or outright cut their teeth directing some of the OVAs (Masami Obari comes to mind and is SUPER obvious when you see them).Introduction Bladerunner was a bolt of lightning when it came to sci-fi movies. There's some cheesecake like panties once in a blue moon and there are maybe 2 instances of outright nudity that I can recall, but it's nothing truly awful and pandering like you see nowadays.
The obvious Blade Runner references and nods are actually well-played to the point where I was hoping in BR2049 they would have just acknowledged the Japanese Genom corp as a competitor to Replicants, even if only in passing, to bring them all into some weird soft-canon of awesomeness. At the least it kind of answered the question of if Sylia is a boomer or at least augmented in some way like how in Blade Runner Deckard was all but told to be a replicant, in the end. To be honest, I enjoyed 2040 a lot, as well, even if it went in some odd directions. It's a shame the production woes and then.
